The Vertical Carry / Tummy to Tummy | ||
1. Place baby high up on your shoulder opposite the rings. Be sure to support your baby's weight until you are sure they are secure. |
2. Lower your baby into the sling while support their weight. Let their feet come out the bottom if they desire. Make sure the pouch of the sling is under their bottom like a chair. |
3. Keep baby high and support their weight while you pull on the tail to tighten the sling. For thicker fabrics, try pulling out and down. Most people are comfortable with the rings landing in front of their shoulder, about where you would pin a corsage. If this is not comfortable, try the rings slightly lower. If the rings end up too low and uncomfortable, loosen and begin again, with the rings higher. Make sure that when you tighten the tail, you don't pull the whole sling down. Hold onto it while you hold your baby to keep it in place. |
4. Spread the body of the sling across your baby's back and shoulders. For very small infants, the top part of the sling can come up around the back of the neck or head for support. |
5. The top rail will probably be a little bit loose at this point. Baby will not be tight up against you. If you let go, they would lean back a bit. Pull on the part of the tail connected to the upper part of the pouch so the top gets tighter. Pull out to the side to avoid twisting in the rings. If your tail is twisted in the rings. Hold your baby's weight and pull up on the lower ring to loosen it. Re-tighten the tail. Try doing this a couple of times to correct the tail twist. |
6. For added comfort, pull out fabric to cup your shoulder area. |
7. If your baby's legs/feet are hanging out, make sure the fabric is extended to the knees. Their bottom should be a bit lower than the thighs to avoid red marks on the backs of their legs.. |
8. Most babies like to be held in this position. For newborns with floppy heads, bring up the top rail of the sling up behind their head and neck for support. Small babies may also like to keep their feet inside of the sling in a crouching position. |
9. To loosen the sling, pull up on the bottom ring, and let the tail unthread a bit. Always make sure to hold your baby's weight securely. |
